What does CP2501 mean?
CP2501 is an early-stage notice in the same process that produces CP2000. The IRS found income reported by third parties that doesn't match your return, but rather than proposing an immediate change, they are asking for your explanation first. This is actually a better outcome than going straight to CP2000 — you have an opportunity to clarify before any tax is assessed.
What should you do next?
- 1Review the notice to identify exactly which income items are in question
- 2Respond in writing within 60 days explaining where the income was reported on your return, or why it wasn't required to be
- 3Attach copies of relevant schedules, 1099s, and any pages of your return that address the discrepancy
- 4If the income was unreported and you owe more, it is better to acknowledge it now and arrange payment than to dispute unsuccessfully
Frequently asked questions
Is CP2501 the same as CP2000?
They address the same issue (income discrepancy) but CP2501 comes first and asks for your explanation before assessing tax. CP2000 proposes a specific dollar amount. A good CP2501 response can prevent CP2000 from being issued.
